What’s the difference between having a routine and being stuck in a rut? Whilst it is good to have a standard routine that helps you accomplish things in your busy life, feeling stuck in a rut really will drag you down.
If you have the feeling that your life is stuck in a rut, it can be extremely depressing. Every day is predictable, long and monotonous with nothing to drive you to produce results.
Stuck in a Rut or Running in Circles?
When you are stuck in a rut, you get no personal satisfaction out of your life. This is due to the feeling that you have a repetitive, unfulfilling lifestyle.
Unfortunately, we all have major tragedies happen in our lives and these are difficult to deal with. But it’s far harder when all you’re surrounded with on a day to day basis is mediocrity and the mundane.
You spend each and every day feeling as though you’re not going anywhere. After a certain point in time, you feel like you’re just running in circles. Not actually getting anything accomplished.
Do You Know if You Are Stuck in a Rut?
It sounds ridiculous but you may not actually know that you are stuck in a rut. Being stuck in a rut like this isn’t necessarily obvious to you at first. Because you’re not distinctly upset by it like you would be with something major. You’re not extremely sad, but you’re not happy either.
It’s like living in a purgatory. But over the years, this can really weigh down on your mental health. Not feeling as though you’re making any progress is a horrible feeling. Especially after many years.
Are You Where You Want to be in Your Life?
The first step in the right direction is realising that you’re not where you want to be in either your personal or professional life.
Many people aren’t aware that they’re stuck in a rut. Until it’s far too late. When they’re already past the point of being able to do anything about it.
You need to catch the situation early. So that you can make the right course correction in your life in time for you to live the way that you want to.
This is a pretty difficult process to do. Which is why it’s so often undetected until someone is elderly and looking back on all of their regrets. Sometimes it is easier to stay ‘safe’ in the rut that you have found. Just remember that you don’t want to be looking back at your life full of regret.
Risk for Reward
You can get comfort from the things that you already know. Going through life doing the same thing day after day does make you feel secure. Because you already know how almost every day is going to turn out. You are unlikely to have any nasty surprises.
Living like this does have a lot less risk. But it also has far less reward. This is due to the peaks and troughs being so much smaller.
The problem is that although you feel safe because you feel you know what will happen in you day, life is hard. Everything feels a battle. You feel like you are running uphill every day.
What is Holding You Back?
One important aspect of escaping this rut is being able to pinpoint exactly what’s going wrong. If you try to lump everything together, claiming that your life has just come to screeching halt, you’re not going to be able to fix anything.
In order to fix something, you have to know what the exact problem is. Knowing that there’s a problem is a crucial step, but it’s not the most important part.
Start Making Changes
You have to be able to point out exactly what it is in your life that’s holding you back. Whether that be your job, your home life, your location, or anything else. Only then can you start to make changes accordingly.
So acknowledge to yourself that you are stuck in a rut. Make a commitment to yourself to start doing something about it.
